Why is Coffee called Joe?
An average Joe is an ordinary person or regular guy and I guess many people have at least one coffee a day, so it's like a familiar friend. But some suggest there's more to it than that.
In my research, I came across this site, which attributes the phrase to WW1 US Navy Secretary, Josephus Daniels. Something of a puritan, he sought to eradicate prostitution and alcohol consumption from naval ports and replace this with something more wholesome - like a daily cup of coffee, which then became briefly known as Josephus Daniels and more practically, to just Joe. I'm not sure how true it is but it's a good story.
Here in the Praski camp, we are ardent viewers of Coffee Man, Todd Carmichael and his Travel Channel Series - Dangerous Grounds. If you've never seen it, you really must check it out. He's a man who'll go to the ends of the earth and risk everything for a very special cup of Joe!
