Roll out the red carpet

You can roll out the red carpet or maybe give someone the red carpet treatment.

When Presidents and VIPs visit other countries, usually, a red carpet is laid out for them as they leave the plane. This is a sign of respect and recognition of their status.

So it's literal but also metaphoric.

Somebody used to the red carpet treatment was the man from Red Square, Boris Yeltsin.

Scary to think that this guy once held so much power - and Bush too. What a mess!

Still, you have to laugh.
